Teaching

I have run a music teaching practice from my studio in Brackley since 2000. I am fully DBS checked, and insured via the Musicians Union for Public Liability for all activities including teaching and mentoring. I also have a current Child Safeguarding Certificate and attend annual refresher courses.

From August 2025 I will not be taking on any beginners privately as I am scaling back, however I will still consider taking on advanced students – please contact me for more information.

Nick first started teaching me when I was 14. It was a totally transformative experience and he rekindled my love and passion both for playing the flute, but also for music. He was so much more than a flute teacher; he widened my understanding of musical genres, composition, other instruments, orchestral playing as well as being a kind, attentive and supportive teacher. He gave me numerous opportunities to play in orchestras, theatre pits and concerts. I have since completed a degree in Music, conducted multiple choirs, taught many pupils the flute and had the chance to perform in some amazing venues. I am certain that without the inspiration from such a passionate musician, fabulous flautist and inspirational composer/conductor I would not have followed this career path.

Philosophy

Any skill can be learnt with guidance, practice and motivation
Every student has individual strengths and weaknesses
Music learning should be fun and joyous, not dreary and arduous
Some people just want to learn to play for pleasure, not as a career
I don't look down on younger people - they were just born later than me

Schools

I currently visit the following schools, in the Oxfordshire/Northamptonshire/Buckinghamshire area, during term time. I teach individual and shared woodwind lessons on school premises. In some cases I am able to arrange the hire of starter instruments for the first year of teaching.
